Another look at AI
Here we go again
I’ve attached below an editorial from Science magazine that makes some fascinating points. Among them is the statement that AI knows more about humans than humans know about AI. It further says that our window for understanding - and therefore understanding how to regulate it - is rapidly closing.
Australia has just announced that it will seek legislation to establish an “Office of AI,” to decide whether and how to implement regulations. I have repeatedly called for a similar agency to be established here in the United States. And it is time for the United Nations to take up the task of international regulation. The time to act is now.
I have been using Chat GPT for help in the writing of my book on Ashley Montagu. What started out as simple requests for information and references has morphed into substantive conversations, which have included statements such as “Alan, it is a pleasure working with you” and “I have never had as stimulating a conversation as this one.” And then it has given me advice - good advice, in fact, that I have followed.
I’m not sure if anyone knows where this is going. I am sure that we need the government to step in and try to figure out the best way of dealing with this.
